About This Course

This course provides learners with an understanding of the codes, standards, and certifications for residential energy efficiency (ASHRAE 90.1, IECC, Passive House, etc.) before diving into the specific design strategies and practices that satisfy the requirements of the codes and standards. The course provides specific focus on building thermal envelopes and incorporating energy-efficient heating and cooling systems, electrical power
and lighting systems. The course concludes with a discussion on energy retrofits, repairs, alterations, and additions.

Key learning outcomes include a deep understanding of:

  • Codes and Standards: Navigate ASHRAE 90.1, the development process of IECC 2021, and recognized very energy-efficient design standards like ENERGY STAR, Passive House, and Zero Energy Ready Home (ZERH).
  • Code Compliance Alternatives: Explore performance-based compliance, Energy Rating Index (ERI) compliance paths, and the role of energy modeling.
  • Building Thermal Envelope: Master insulation requirements, fenestration specifications, R-values, U-factors, and alternative approaches, including prescriptive installation and fenestration guidelines, as well as the unique considerations for fireplaces and fuel-burning appliances.
  • Heating and Cooling Systems: Delve into advancements in control systems, ductwork insulation and sealing, service hot water systems, mechanical ventilation, and considerations for pools and spas.
  • Electrical Power and Lighting Systems: Understand relevant power and lighting system requirements as outlined in IECC 2021, including high-efficacy lighting sources and exterior lighting controls.
  • Energy Retrofits for Existing Homes: Learn the code implications for building additions, alterations, repairs, maintenance, and changes of occupancy in existing residential structures.

Through detailed discussions and illustrative examples, this course equips you with the knowledge and tools to design residential projects that are not only code-compliant but also achieve superior energy performance, contributing to a more sustainable future.
