Architects and architectural professionals in Canada require Continuing Education or Learning hours to maintain their professional designation. Browse courses that meet your requirements, or choose one of our course packages, specially curated to contain all the hours and credits you need, in one place. The courses on LearnFormula may be counted towards professionally relevant, verifiable learning activities. It is the student's responsibility to validate whether an activity is an eligible educational activity for their professional development requirements based on their own learning needs.
Architects in Alberta are required to complete 70 learning hours (LHs) every two years, with activities categorized as either Structured or Unstructured learning. The current reporting period ends on June 30, 2026, and all learning hours must be completed and reported within that timeframe. A maximum of 10 Structured hours and 20 Unstructured hours may be carried forward to the next cycle.
Structured learning activities must be at least one hour long, supported by valid proof of participation (such as a certificate, transcript, or provider letter), and directly relate to the business or practice of architecture or interior design. Examples include courses, conference sessions, workshops, seminars, and formal mentoring.
Structured topics may include:
Unstructured learning activities must also be at least one hour in length and professionally relevant. These may include reading, research, guided tours, writing, informal presentations, or participation in discussion groups or committee meetings. Proof of participation is not required for Unstructured activities.
Members are responsible for self-reporting third-party learning activities through the online professional development portal. Each entry must reflect the reporting period in which the learning occurred and include:
Proof is required for Structured learning only. Documentation must include the participant’s name, course title, provider name, date, and total hours. Confirmation of registration or receipts will not be accepted.
Attendance at officially organized events may be recorded automatically where an attendance form is signed, but members are encouraged to verify their transcript status. Members can confirm whether their requirements are met by checking the “Status” field in the reporting portal.
Members must retain documentation for all Structured learning activities for two years after the reporting period ends. A random audit of 3% of members is conducted following each cycle. Audited members must provide supporting documentation within 30 days. Inconsistencies may result in the removal of hours or a finding of non-compliance.
Members who are not compliant by July 1, 2026 will receive a $750 non-compliance fee and may be subject to cancellation proceedings unless all requirements are fulfilled within the prescribed timeline.
